How do Markdown tables work?
A Markdown table is plain text: cells separated by pipes, a header row, then a row of dashes that marks the header and sets alignment. Writing one by hand for more than a few rows is slow and easy to get wrong, especially when a cell itself contains a pipe or a line break. This tool takes care of both and pads the columns so the table is readable before it is rendered.
Markdown tables are meant for small tables. For hundreds of rows, link to the CSV file instead; GitHub also renders .csv files as tables on its own.
Detects the separator
Comma, semicolon, tab or pipe, read from the first lines. Override it if the guess is wrong.
Escapes pipes
A | inside a cell becomes \| so it does not split the cell in two.
Line breaks kept
A quoted CSV cell that spans lines becomes <br>, which GitHub renders as a line break.
Alignment row
Left (:---), center (:---:) or right (---:) applied to every column.
