About

Turning HTML into Markdown

The HTML is read with your browser's own parser, so messy markup from editors and email clients is handled the way a browser would. Each element is then mapped to its Markdown form: <h2> to ##, <strong> to **, <a> to [text](url), <ul> to - items, <table> to a pipe table and <pre> to a fenced code block. Anything without a Markdown equivalent, such as <span> or <div>, keeps its text and loses the tag.

Markdown is simpler than HTML. Colours, fonts, merged table cells and layout are lost, which is usually the point when you want clean text.

Code blocks with language

A class such as language-python on the <code> element carries over to the ``` fence.

Tables

The first row becomes the header row; pipes inside cells are escaped.

Nested lists

Lists inside lists are indented, and numbered lists keep their start number.

Clutter removed

Scripts, styles, forms, buttons and iframes are dropped.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions people ask about the HTML to Markdown converter.

Yes. Paste the page source and the head, scripts and styles are ignored. Menus and footers are converted too, so it is often cleaner to copy just the article element from your browser's developer tools.
