About

How browser audio conversion works

Your browser already knows how to decode the common audio formats in order to play them. The converter asks it to decode the whole file into raw audio, optionally resamples it or mixes it down to mono, and then encodes it again: as uncompressed 16-bit WAV, or as MP3 with the open-source LAME encoder running in the page. Everything happens on your device, which is why it works for private recordings.

Converting from one lossy format to another (M4A or OGG to MP3) loses a little more quality each time. Start from the original recording, or from WAV or FLAC, when you can.

Reads what your browser plays

MP3, WAV, AAC/M4A and FLAC everywhere, OGG and Opus in most browsers, and often the audio track of MP4 and WebM videos.

MP3 bitrate

96 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for most music, 320 kbps for the highest MP3 quality.

Mono and sample rate

Mono halves the size of speech recordings; 16 kHz is plenty for voice.
