About

Where the conversion factors come from

Most imperial and US units have exact metric definitions set by international agreement: an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg and a US gallon exactly 3.785411784 litres. The converter uses those exact values and shows up to 10 significant digits, so 1 mile comes out as exactly 1.609344 km. Temperature is the exception: it is converted with formulas, because 0 °C is not 0 °F.

Months and years are averages (a year of 365.2425 days, as in the Gregorian calendar). For calendar maths between two dates, count the actual days instead.

Exact definitions

Inches, feet, miles, pounds, ounces and gallons use their legal metric definitions.

Decimal and binary sizes

1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows about 931 GiB.

US and UK gallons

A US gallon is 3.785 L, a UK (imperial) gallon 4.546 L, and cups and spoons here are US measures.

Calories

Food labels' Calories are kilocalories. Energy uses the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J).

Subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. 98.6 °F is 37 °C. The converter does this for you, and -40 is the one temperature that is the same in both.
