About

What is a Unix timestamp?

Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. It is a single number with no time zone, which is why databases, logs and APIs use it. JavaScript and Java often use milliseconds instead, giving a 13-digit number rather than 10 digits. Mixing the two up puts a date in 1970 or tens of thousands of years in the future.

Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Modern systems use 64-bit values, but old embedded devices and file formats can still be affected.

Auto-detects the unit

Values of 100 billion or more are read as milliseconds, smaller ones as seconds. You can force either.

Your time zone and UTC

The same moment shown in the time zone your device uses and in UTC.

ISO 8601

The 2025-01-01T00:00:00.000Z format used by JSON APIs and JavaScript's toISOString().

Local or UTC input

When converting a date, choose whether the time you enter is local or UTC.
