MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes. Use them only to compare files or for legacy systems, and never to store passwords.

Get the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hash of any text at once. Add a secret key to create HMAC signatures, for example to test a webhook.

How it works

How It Works

Hash text in three steps.

01

Enter the text

Every character counts, including spaces and line breaks.

02

Add a key if needed

With a key, the SHA rows become HMAC-SHA signatures.

03

Copy a hash

Each algorithm has its own copy button.

About

What is a hash function?

A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing a single character changes the hash completely. That makes hashes useful for checking that data was not altered and for comparing values without storing them. You cannot reverse a hash to get the text back, but weak algorithms can be attacked in other ways.

For passwords, none of these is suitable on its own. Use a slow, salted password hash such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 in your application.

Five algorithms

MD5 (128 bits), SHA-1 (160), SHA-256 (256), SHA-384 (384) and SHA-512 (512), shown together.

HMAC

Combines the text with a secret key, as used to sign webhooks and API requests (GitHub and Stripe use HMAC-SHA256).

UTF-8 input

Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, matching what most programming languages do by default.

Browser crypto

SHA hashes use your browser's built-in Web Crypto; MD5, which Web Crypto lacks, is implemented in the page.

Features

Why Use This Hash Generator

All the common hashes at once.

Side by side

All five algorithms are calculated together, so you do not have to switch.

Test webhooks

Recreate an HMAC-SHA256 signature to check your verification code.

Upper or lower case

Some systems expect upper-case hex; switch with one tick.

Private

Secrets and keys you enter are never sent anywhere.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions people ask about the Hash Generator.

Usually a hidden difference in the input: a trailing newline, a space, or a different encoding. Many command-line examples add a newline (echo adds one unless you use echo -n). The tool hashes exactly what is in the box, as UTF-8.
