Paste the expected value to check it.

About

What is SHA-1 used for today?

SHA-1 produces a 160-bit hash, written as 40 hexadecimal characters. It was the standard for years, and you still meet it in older software checksums, some APIs and as the way Git names objects (although Git is moving to SHA-256). Since 2017 researchers have produced different files with the same SHA-1, so it should not be used where someone might tamper with data on purpose.

Git hashes a file with a short header in front ("blob <size>\0"), so a file's SHA-1 here differs from its Git object ID. That is expected.

Checksum check

Paste an expected value; extra text after the hash, such as a file name, is ignored.

Legacy only

For new work, use SHA-256.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions people ask about the SHA-1 Hash Generator.

Not for security. Practical collisions were shown in 2017, and browsers and certificate authorities stopped trusting SHA-1 certificates. It is still fine for detecting accidental changes.
