About

What is an MD5 hash?

MD5 turns any input into a 128-bit fingerprint, written as 32 hexadecimal characters. The same input always gives the same hash, so comparing two MD5 values is a quick way to check that a file was copied or downloaded without corruption. MD5 is no longer safe against deliberate tampering: researchers can create two different files with the same MD5, so for security checks use SHA-256 instead.

To check a download properly, prefer SHA-256 when the publisher offers it. The SHA-256 Hash Generator works the same way.

Files up to 1 GB

Pick any file type; it is read into your browser's memory and hashed there.

Checksum comparison

Paste the expected hash, even with the file name after it as md5sum prints it.

Text as UTF-8

Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, the same as most programming languages and command-line tools.

Not for passwords

MD5 is too fast and too broken to protect passwords or signatures.
