About

Random strings for codes and IDs

A random string is a sequence of characters picked independently from an alphabet you define. Short ones work as coupon or invite codes, hex strings as test tokens or color-like IDs, and long mixed ones as secrets for development. How hard a string is to guess depends on its length and the number of possible characters, shown here as bits of randomness.

For passwords people will type, the Password Generator is the better fit: it guarantees every character type appears and can leave out look-alike characters.

Secure and unbiased

Characters are picked with crypto.getRandomValues using rejection sampling, so every character is equally likely.

Your own alphabet

Combine the presets with extra characters; a character listed twice is only counted once.

No duplicates

With No duplicate strings ticked, a repeated string is drawn again.

Strength shown

Bits of randomness = length × log2(number of characters).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions people ask about the Random String Generator.

The randomness is cryptographically secure. A 32-character string of letters and digits has about 190 bits, far beyond guessing. For production keys, generate them in your own system so they are never shown in a browser at all.
