Generate a Strong Password
Very strong · about 129 bits of entropy

How It Works
Create a password in three steps.
Set the length
Drag the slider from 6 to 64 characters. 16 or more is a good default.
Choose character types
Letters, numbers and symbols, and optionally leave out characters that look alike.
Copy it
Paste it into the sign-up form and save it in your password manager.
What makes a password strong?
Length and randomness. A password's strength is measured in bits of entropy: the length multiplied by log2 of the number of possible characters. With all four character types there are 87 possible characters, so each one adds about 6.4 bits and the default 20-character password has about 129 bits. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker needs.
A strong password still fails if it is reused. Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager.
Secure random
Every character is picked with crypto.getRandomValues, with no bias towards any character.
Every type used
At least one character from each type you tick, so the password passes sites that require a digit or a symbol.
No look-alikes
Optionally removes I, l, 1, O, 0, o and similar punctuation for passwords you will read out or type by hand.
Entropy estimate
Shown with a rating: under 50 bits weak, 50 to 74 fair, 75 to 99 strong, 100 or more very strong.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions people ask about the Password Generator.
At least 12 characters for everyday accounts and 16 or more for email, banking and your password manager's master password. Longer is better than adding more symbol rules.
This page generates passwords with JavaScript in your browser and never sends them anywhere. You can check this by turning off your internet connection: the generator keeps working. Even so, a password manager's built-in generator is the most convenient choice.
It measures how many guesses a random password takes to find: 2 to the power of the bits. 80 bits is roughly a trillion trillion combinations, far out of reach of guessing attacks against a properly stored password.
Characters such as l, 1, I and O, 0 are easy to confuse when you read a password aloud or type it from a printout. Removing them costs a little entropy, so add a couple of characters of length to make up for it.
