About

What makes a good URL slug?

A slug is the readable part at the end of a URL, as in /blog/better-cafe-photos. Good slugs are short, lower case, use hyphens between words and contain only letters and digits, so they never need percent-encoding. Google's URL guidelines recommend hyphens over underscores because hyphens are read as word separators.

Once a page is published, keep its slug. Changing it breaks existing links unless you add a redirect from the old URL.

Accents removed

é becomes e, ü becomes u, ß becomes ss and æ becomes ae, so "Crème Brûlée" gives creme-brulee.

& becomes "and"

"Salt & Pepper" turns into salt-and-pepper rather than losing the meaning.

Length limit at a word

With a maximum length, the slug is cut at the last whole word that fits, never in the middle of one.

Optional stop-word removal

Drops words such as a, the, of and to: "How to Convert a PDF to Word" becomes how-convert-pdf-word.

Hyphens. Google reads a hyphen as a space between words but may read an underscore as joining them. Underscores are offered for systems that require them, such as some file naming schemes.
