A failed PDF split becoming a correct ZIP download with a check mark

Most Split PDF problems come down to the file itself: a password, a damaged PDF or a very large document. The messages the tool shows point straight to the cause.

Use the table below to match what you see to a fix.

Key takeaways

  • The message that a PDF may be encrypted, corrupted or invalid means the file could not be opened.
  • At least one page must be selected before you can continue.
  • If the ZIP cannot be built, the tool downloads the pages one by one instead.
  • Huge PDFs may need splitting in stages.

Could not read this PDF

The tool tells you the PDF may be encrypted, corrupted, or not a valid PDF. Open it in a normal viewer. If it asks for a password, remove the protection with Unlock PDF when you are allowed to, then split the unlocked copy. If it will not open anywhere, it is probably damaged. Download or request it again.

No pages selected

You need at least one page selected to continue. All pages are selected when you first add a file, so this usually happens after pressing clear. Click the pages you want, or use select all.

The ZIP will not build or open

If the browser cannot create the ZIP, the tool says so and downloads each PDF separately. Your browser may ask to allow multiple downloads. Allow it, and all pages will arrive. If the ZIP downloads but will not open, extract it with your system's built-in tool, and check that the download finished.

Large documents

The tool is set up for PDFs up to 100 MB. Pages are copied in memory, so a very large file on a phone may struggle. Split it in two halves first, then split each half. Reduce the size beforehand with Compress PDF if you only need the pages as pictures.

Split PDF problems: FAQ

Why does Split PDF say it could not read my PDF?

The file may be encrypted, corrupted or not a valid PDF. Unlock it or get a new copy.

Why is the continue button not working?

No pages are selected. Click at least one page.

What if the ZIP does not download?

The tool falls back to downloading each PDF separately. Allow multiple downloads in your browser.

Can I split a protected PDF?

Unlock it first with Unlock PDF.

The tool is slow on my phone. Why?

Large PDFs need memory. Try a desktop browser or split in stages.

Can I use Single PDF to avoid a ZIP?

Yes. It creates one file.

Does the original file change?

No.

Is anything uploaded?

No. All processing is in your browser.

Why does my browser ask about multiple downloads?

When a ZIP cannot be built, the tool starts one download per page. Allow it once and all the pages arrive.

Almost always a file problem
