HEIC to JPG Not Working? Fixes for Failed Conversions

BySoftware Developer
Published 3 min read
A failed HEIC conversion becoming a JPG with a check mark

HEIC conversion is heavier than most image tasks, because the format is complex to decode. When it fails, the cause is usually a file that is not truly HEIC, a very large batch or a device short of memory.

Match your symptom in the table, then try the fix.

Key takeaways

  • The tool accepts HEIC and HEIF files. Files that are already JPG will not be listed.
  • Convert in smaller batches if the browser slows or stops.
  • Photos exported or renamed by other apps may have a changed extension.
  • A damaged file will fail whatever tool you use.

The file is not added

Only files with a HEIC or HEIF name or type are accepted. If the photo is already a JPG, it needs no conversion. Messaging apps and some cloud services convert HEIC to JPG on download but keep a .heic name in some cases, so check the real format by opening the file on a computer.

Large batches

Every photo is decoded on your device. A phone with limited memory may struggle with a big set, and a desktop browser with many tabs open may too. Close other tabs and convert in groups of 10 to 20 photos. If you keep getting stuck on one file, remove it from the list and try it alone.

A damaged or incomplete file

A photo copied while the transfer was interrupted may be truncated. Try opening it in another viewer. If it fails there, copy it again from the phone or from the iCloud original. The size should match the original.

Live Photos and bursts

  • A Live Photo is a still HEIC plus a short video file. Only the still is converted.
  • A HEIC that holds several images, such as some burst or depth photos, yields its first image.
  • To get the video part, copy the movie file separately from the phone.

Other routes

To skip conversions in future, make the iPhone save JPG (iPhone settings). If you only need to view HEIC, see open HEIC photos on Windows. You can also try HEIC to PNG or HEIC to PDF. The usual steps are in how to convert HEIC to JPG.

HEIC to JPG problems: FAQ

Why won't my HEIC file convert?

It may be damaged, not really HEIC, or too much for your device's memory at once.

Why does my photo not appear in the list?

The tool accepts HEIC and HEIF files only. A JPG needs no conversion.

How many photos can I convert at once?

As many as your device handles. 10 to 20 at a time is a safe batch on phones.

Why did I get only one image from my file?

Only the first image of a multi-image HEIC is converted.

What happens to the video in a Live Photo?

It is not converted. Copy the movie file separately.

Why do the colors look different?

Newer iPhones capture a wide color range, so conversion can shift colors slightly.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.

What if nothing downloads?

Check your browser's download permissions for the site.

Smaller batches, intact files

Check the format, convert in groups and use fresh copies of any file that fails.
