PNG to JPG: Transparent Background Turns White (Fixes)

A transparent PNG becoming a JPG with a white background and a check mark

JPG has no way to store transparency, so any see-through area in a PNG has to become a solid color. PNG to JPG fills those areas with white before saving, so a logo with a transparent background becomes a logo on white.

That is usually what you want, and the sections below cover the cases where it is not.

Key takeaways

  • Transparent and partly transparent pixels are blended onto white.
  • Some converters fill with black instead. This tool uses white.
  • If you need transparency, keep PNG or use WebP.
  • For a colored background, add it before converting.

Why this happens

PNG pixels carry a color and an opacity. JPG pixels carry only a color. Every pixel needs a color, so the converter decides what shows through the transparent parts. This tool draws a white background first and then places the PNG on top, which gives a natural look on documents and web pages.

Soft edges and shadows

Partly transparent pixels, such as the soft edge of a drop shadow, are blended with white. On a white page that looks right. On a dark page the JPG will show a light halo. If the picture will sit on a colored background, keep the PNG.

What to do instead

Options by goal
GoalOption
Keep transparencyStay with PNG, or convert to WebP with PNG to WebP
White background, smaller filePNG to JPG as it is
Another background colorPlace the PNG on that color in an image editor, then convert
Smaller PNG with transparencyUse PNG to WebP, which supports transparency

PNG to WebP keeps the see-through areas and usually gives a smaller file than PNG; see PNG vs WebP.

Check before you replace the original

  • Open the JPG on a dark background to spot white halos.
  • Keep the original PNG if you might need transparency later.
  • Look at fine text and thin lines: JPG may add faint speckles.

After converting

To reduce size further, use Image Compressor. For the basic conversion steps, read how to convert PNG to JPG, and for the full format comparison, PNG vs JPG.

Transparent PNGs that are really photos

Some PNG photos have a transparent border from a cut-out or a screenshot tool. The JPG shows that border as white, which can look like a frame. If you do not want it, crop it off first with Crop Image by trimming a few percent from each edge, then convert.

Transparent PNG to JPG: FAQ

Why does my transparent PNG get a white background?

JPG cannot store transparency, so the tool fills see-through areas with white.

Can I make the background another color?

Place the PNG on that color in an image editor first, then convert.

Is there a way to keep transparency?

Keep PNG or convert to WebP.

Why is there a light halo around my logo?

Soft edges were blended with white. Use PNG if the logo sits on a dark background.

Does the tool ever produce a black background?

No. It fills with white.

Will a photograph change?

No, unless it has transparent pixels.

Will the file be smaller?

For photographs, usually. For flat graphics, not always.

Does the tool upload my image?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.

Will a photo with no transparency look different after conversion?

Only by the small amount of JPG compression. Nothing is added or removed from the picture itself.

Can I convert a logo with a transparent background and keep it clean?

Only if it will sit on a white page. For any other background keep the PNG, or use PNG to WebP.

White fill by design

JPG cannot be see-through. Keep the PNG when transparency matters, and convert only for places that need a plain image.
