Photo Sideways or Upside Down? How to Fix It for Good

A sideways photo becoming upright with a check mark

A photo can look right on your phone and sideways in an email, a form or a document. The reason is that cameras often save the picture in one orientation and add a note saying how to turn it. Apps that read the note show it upright, and apps that ignore it show it sideways.

The reliable fix is to save a copy where the pixels themselves are turned the right way. Then no note is needed.

Key takeaways

  • Phones record how the camera was held in a metadata tag, instead of always turning the pixels.
  • Apps that ignore the tag show the photo sideways or upside down.
  • Rotating in the tool saves a new image with upright pixels and without the tag.
  • Check the preview first. Rotate until it looks right, and the saved file matches.
How to Rotate an Image for Free
Steps shown in the video
  1. Click Choose Images and select the photos to rotate
  2. Each file is listed with a preview and its size
  3. Choose the angle, here 90° clockwise
  4. Click Rotate images
  5. Download your rotated images

Why the same photo looks different in different apps

A camera sensor always records the image in the same direction. To save time, many phones then store a small orientation value in the file's metadata instead of rotating millions of pixels. A viewer that understands the value turns the photo for display. A viewer that ignores it shows the raw layout.

That is why one photo can look correct in your gallery, rotated in a web form and upright again after you open it somewhere else. The picture is the same. The apps disagree about the note.

Fix it permanently

  1. 1

Open Rotate Image and add the photo. The preview shows the picture the way a modern browser displays it.

  2. 2

Choose the turn that makes the preview upright. If the picture lies on its left side, choose 90° clockwise. If it lies on its right side, choose 90° counter-clockwise. If it is upside down, choose 180°.

  3. 3

Rotate and download. The new file has upright pixels and carries no orientation note, so every app shows it the same way.

Which way should you turn?

Mirrored, with backwards textFlip instead of rotate

Backwards text is a sign of a mirror image rather than a turn. In that case use Flip Image, and read fixing mirrored photos and backwards text. The difference is explained in flip vs rotate.

Scans, screenshots and downloaded images

Scanners and screenshot tools do not use the orientation note, so a sideways scan is sideways in the pixels. The same rotation fixes it. If many pages of a document are the wrong way round, turn them in a batch: all the files share the chosen angle and download as a ZIP.

Sideways pages inside a PDF

A PDF page has its own rotation setting. Fix a sideways page in a PDF with Rotate PDF, which turns the pages without converting them to images. Use the image rotator only for image files.

A small privacy bonus

Because the rotated copy is a new image, the original camera details and location tags are not carried over. If privacy is your main goal, Remove EXIF does that without changing the picture.

Sideways photos: FAQ

Why does my photo look sideways after uploading?

The photo is stored with an orientation note that the website ignores. Save a copy with upright pixels to fix it.

Will rotating fix it everywhere?

Yes. The saved copy has the pixels turned correctly and no orientation note, so apps show it the same way.

Which direction do I rotate?

If the picture lies on its left side, turn 90° clockwise. If it lies on its right side, turn 90° counter-clockwise.

My photo is upside down. What do I choose?

Choose 180°.

Does rotating a quarter turn lose quality?

JPG and WebP are saved again at 92 percent quality, which rarely shows. PNG is saved losslessly.

Can I fix many photos at once?

Yes, if they all need the same turn. They download as a ZIP.

What about sideways pages in a PDF?

Use Rotate PDF, which changes the page rotation inside the document.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Rotation happens in your browser.

Upright pixels, no surprises

Rotate once, save the copy, and the photo looks right in every app. Keep the original in case you want to turn it differently.
